As you may have read by now, Craigslist has censored its "adult services" section. This appears to stem from a combination of pressure from numerous state attorneys general and negative media exposure. The issue at hand: prostitution and human trafficking being solicited through the site.

The situation brings to mind the conviction of Google execs over content uploaded to Google-owned YouTube, which led us to asking if social media sites should be held accountable for user actions. Should Craigslist be held responsible? Comment here.

Craiglist opted to display a "censored" bar over the "adult services" category, caving to the pressure to remove it, while also making it obvious that its not really what they wanted to do. They could've simply removed it. Craigslist clearly feels attacked. Some have even suggested that the move was made to influence public opinion.

Some are coming at the story raising questions about free speech, and while that is one issue, not even all supporters of online free speech find this to be the real issue at hand. Microsoft Research Senior Researcher Danah Boyd wrote a lengthy editorial on the subject for the Huffington Post in which she comes to Craigslist defense (as a service provider, not for censoring the section). Boyd, who claims to be a victim of abuse herself, makes the case that censoring Craigslist does more to add to the problem than to help solve it, saying that it helps the abusers.

"The Internet has changed the dynamics of prostitution and trafficking, making it easier for prostitutes and traffickers to connect with clients without too many layers of intermediaries," she writes. "As a result, the Internet has become an intermediary, often without the knowledge of those internet service providers (ISPs) who are the conduits. This is what makes people believe that they should go after ISPs like Craigslist. Faulty logic suggests that if Craigslist is effectively a digital pimp who's profiting off of online traffic, why shouldn't it be prosecuted as such?"

"The problem with this logic is that it fails to account for three important differences," Boyd continues. "1) most ISPs have a fundamental business -- if not moral -- interest in helping protect people; 2) the visibility of illicit activities online makes it much easier to get at, and help, those who are being victimized; and 3) a one-stop-shop is more helpful for law enforcement than for criminals. In short, Craigslist is not a pimp, but a public perch from which law enforcement can watch without being seen."

Boyd elaborates on each of these points in the article. Despite the censoring, Craigslist appears to agree with Boyd.

"The law is on craigslist's side - websites are not liable for content posted by users under section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. But craigslist has given up anyway," says Adrianne Jeffries at ReadWriteWeb. "It's not because its owners want to prevent sex trafficking - craigslist has maintained that it does more harm than good because law enforcement agencies can use it just as easily as pimps can."

There has been a lot of criticism about how the media has covered the story in general, with Craigslist itself probably being the harshest critic. CNN's Amber Lyon recently interviewed Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, apparently catching him off guard on the subject. In a post at The Faster Times, Newmark says:

Amber approached me after an event where I had just spoken about stuff like getting real support for our troops and veterans — a cause I care about and support whenever I can. She said because “I’m the Craig in craigslist,” she expected me to have all the answers on the spot about anything to do with the company. Well, I don’t. Jim Buckmaster, our CEO, has been running craigslist for the last 10 years. I am a customer service rep, and I still love being connected to our users and trying to help people. But I have no role in managing the company’s operations because basically (a) I suck as a manager, and (b) while overall company direction matters to me as founder and a board director, the deal was to hire good, trustworthy people and then get outta the way. If Amber had done her homework, she would have known ambushing me with questions I am not qualified to answer, or even the right person to ask, would not get CNN's viewers the accurate information they deserve.

Buckmaster also posted a letter to Lyon on the company blog, criticizing her approach. In this clip, Lyon says Craigslist isn't living up to its promise of filtering ads, and offers a rebuttal to Craigslist accusations that she "ambushed" Newmark (though doesn't mention the part about him not running the company). Since the Newmark interview, there has been no shortage of media coverage of Craigslist, though as Jeffries and Lyon both note, Craigslist itself is no longer talking.

Craigslist had another blog post up recently criticizing the notion that alternatives to Craigslist are any better for preventing human trafficking. The post was a response to a Facebook Page based on that notion, indicating that eBay was such an alternative. The post goes on to discuss examples of ads that would contradict that notion. In Boyd's piece, she compared the whole thing to a game of whack-a-mole, suggesting that if you censor one site, the content will simply pop up on another one.

Piper Jaffray, an investment banking firm that earned $7.4 million in net income last quarter, is betting on Android in a big way. Today, Piper Jaffray predicted that Android's market share will pass the 50 percent mark in the next five years.

Don't look for the rise to the halfway mark to happen all at once. The report explained, "We estimate Google will control 14.9% of the smartphone market through Android in 2010, growing to 23.2% in 2012."

Meanwhile, Apple's market share is also supposed to increase, hitting 17.6 percent in 2012.

Here's the key thing, though: according to Larry Dignan, Piper Jaffray stated, "Ultimately, we believe Android is likely to control over half of the smartphone market in the next five years. . . . and we believe ultimately Apple's smartphone market share tops out between 20-30% . . ."

That's a strong endorsement of what Google's doing in the mobile space. It could be a sign that Apple's in trouble, too, since the company's surely tried to convince analysts of a brighter outlook.
“These days, almost everybody carries a cell phone or laptop when traveling, and almost everyone stores information they wouldn't want to share with government officials – from financial records to love letters to family photos," said Catherine Crump, staff attorney with the ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology Project.

"Innocent Americans should not be made to feel like the personal information they store on their laptops and cell phones is vulnerable to searches by government officials any time they travel out of the country."

Today's lawsuit was filed on behalf of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), whose members include television and still photographers, editors, students and representatives of the photojournalism industry; NACDL, which is a plaintiff as well as counsel on the case; and Pascal Abidor, a 26-year-old dual French-American citizen who had his laptop searched and confiscated at the Canadian border.

“Unchecked government fishing expeditions into the constitutionally protected materials on an innocent traveler's laptop or cell phone interfere with the ability of many Americans to do their jobs and do nothing to make us safer," said Melissa Goodman, staff attorney with the ACLU National Security Project. "

Between October 1, 2008 and June 2, 2010, over 6,500 people—nearly 3,000 of them U.S. citizens, were subjected to a search of their electronic devices as they crossed U.S. borders, according to a separate Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the ACLU.

Google has a Google Labs project available called Google Scribe. Google Scribe provides text autocompletion as you type. It provides related word or phrase suggestions, using information you've already typed into a document.

"In addition to saving keystrokes, Google Scribe's suggestions indicate correct or popular phrases to use," says Google.

Google Scribe will show suggestions as you type by default, but that can be changed to "on demand" or my selecting an "on tab" option in the toolbar. Functionality can be toggled on and off with a keyboard shortcut.

Users can choose if they want suggestions to be sorted by alphabetical order, "Google Scribe Score", which is based on popularity, relevance, etc., relevance, or expected typing savings.

There is a Google Scribe bookmarklet that lets you use the tool on any web page. You can give Google Scribe, enable/disable it, and add the bookmarklet here.

The Google Labs listing indicates that Scribe was last updated last month, and I have seen a couple mentions of it from the past, so it appears that it's not a completely new product, but this is the first we've seen of it, and it doesn't appear that many others have discussed it either.

Google is now letting Google Voice users get notifications for missed calls. Users can get notified via their Google Voice inbox or they can opt to receive email notifications (or both).

This would appear to be another step in Google bringing together your different means of communication. Google Voice already gives you a number that when called reaches you through all of your phones.

Google recently rolled out the ability to make and receive calls from within Gmail. The service attracted over a million calls in just 24 hours.

Last week, Google highlighted some additional features of calling in Gmail, like call screening, switching calls between Gmail and other phones, recording incoming calls, and a click-to-dial Chrome extension.

To turn on the Google Voice notifications, go to the Calls tab in the settings menu.

Google, Yahoo, Authentication, Email, google accounts, OpenID
Published:
Description:

Google has announced that it is now using OpenID for its signup process. Yahoo users can sign up for a Google Account with their existing email address.

Google says that "a much larger number of people" complete the email verification process when OpenID is used.

"Some websites use the OpenID standard so that users don't even need to type a password to sign in," says Tzvika Barenholz of Google's Internet Identity Team. "While Google does not yet support the usage of OpenID for replacing passwords on its own sites, we are involved in the OpenID community's efforts to research how to best implement that type of support."

When a Yahoo users signs up, they will see the following page, and when they click the verification button, they will get the page under that from Yahoo.

"Other websites that need to verify a user's email address can also implement this technique using Yahoo!'s OpenID API," says Barenholz. "In addition, it can be used to verify the addresses of Gmail and Google Apps users because those email systems expose the necessary APIs for OpenID. For example, Plaxo is one of the many websites that takes advantage of this feature of Gmail and Yahoo! Mail."

Google is currently only offering the OpenID feature for Yahoo users, but it intends to expand support to other services.

Earlier this year, an anonymous Samsung executive indicated that his (or her) company might build TVs based on Android. Now, although Samsung hasn't exactly released a list of shipping dates, an exec has at least gone on record saying that the possibility remains.

According to Jun Yang and Pavel Alpeyev, Yoon Boo Keun, President of the Visual Display Division at Samsung, made the comment offstage at a forum in Seoul, South Korea.

(Some of) his exact words amounted to "we will have to see, but we are reviewing" whether or not to power televisions with Android.

That could be good news for Google, since a "maybe" at this point is arguably closer to a "yes" than a "no." Samsung's had lots of time to reject Android, after all.

And since Samsung is the world's largest television maker, a partnership would count as a huge win for Google.

Jun Yang and Pavel Alpeyev reported, "Samsung aims to sell 35 million liquid-crystal-display TVs and 4 million plasma TVs this year, including more than 2 million sets that offer 3-D features. The company, which started offering 3-D sets in the U.S. in March, sold more than 1 million units by Aug. 31, giving it an 88 percent share of the U.S. 3-D TV market."
